The Chronic was ranked at #138 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. I am posting this song in honor of this Friday’s Classic of the Week, Lil Ghetto Boy by Dr Dre (1992) which samples from Hathaway’s classic. The Chronic has been widely regarded as one of the most important and influential albums of the 1990s and regarded by many fans and peers to be one of the most well-produced hip hop albums of all time. Off Dre’s legendary 1992 album The Chronic, Lil’ Ghetto Boy is a street anthem for the Rodney King generation which harkens back to the 60s and 70s era of Chicago Soul music with the main sample (heard on the refrain) from Donny Hathaway’s song Little Ghetto Boy (which is also among the classic soul covers performed by John Legend.
Dre’s production has been noted for popularizing the G-funk subgenre within gangsta rap. It doesn’t get any more classic than this.
